It looks like those unlock pdf sites don't work with the results of this process. It keeps coming back with an invalid pdf error. However, when I open the pdf (pdf is the .exe with everything before %PDF-1.4...) it comes up with the password prompt just fine. Any ideas? Thanks!

well, the general problem is the computer still has to read the original exe file... so the exe has to exist somewhere to execute after it is pulled out of the "container" protected file

really, the only way to protect a program, an executable, is to build the protection in to the executable, not put it in a container

Another way to do this is to open the protected file up in a decent hex editor.

Search string format of hex code for "%PDF-X.X".

X.X representing a version number such as 1.4 or 1.6.

Then delete anything above the hex line that contains this, then save file as yourfile.pdf.

This has worked for me on several occasions and should work for you.

there are PDF password crackers out there.. some that just simply remove all restrictions from the PDF file.. I can't find the link, but there's an online one that I used. you upload the pdf and they give you back an unprotected one

They seem to have got around that issue by using the pdf password protect feature. Not sure how to get around that part yet.
